Big Raises, Rewards, Respect for HHS Workers in New Contract

SEIU UHW members who work for Hospital Housekeeping Systems at Tenet's Doctor's Medical Center of Modesto just won BIG improvements to pay, benefits, and respect on the job. The rank-and-file members of our bargaining team stood together with their co-workers and won a great new contract. Last week, members voted overwhelmingly to approve a new contract with raises of 3.5 to 7.5 percent and much more.

Together in SEIU UHW, we have the strength and size to win in a tough economy; just take a look!

Guaranteed Raises and Wage Scale

Raises of 3.5 to 7.5 percent guaranteed in our three-year contract, plus a wage scale that rewards longer-term employees for our experience and loyalty.

"While most people are worried about just keeping their jobs, we won good raises. We stuck together and stayed strong in SEIU UHW, and now we can see the benefits, so I'm voting YES for our contract!"

--Tami Gilmore, bargaining team member

"We won raises of up to 7 ½%, and we even got a wage scale to help guarantee fairness! We never could have done that in this economy without standing together in our union. Let's continue to stand together and ratify our contract."

--Teresa Sumter, bargaining team member

Rewards for Flexibility

  • "Call-in" pay to reward workers' flexibility in scheduling. If management gives employees fewer than 4 hours' notice to come in on our day off, we get time-and-a-half pay for accepting work that day. Even better, we're also guaranteed at least 2 hours' pay that day, regardless of what time we come in.

  • An $1 extra per hour if we agree during our shift to work in a different department or area of the hospital. That way, if we're pulled away from our job, we receive extra compensation.

Respect: Call-offs and cancellations

We included per diem workers into the flex-off list, which means that if the census is low, management must now call-off or send home per diem employees before regular full- or part-time workers. Now the call-off list is volunteers first, then employees on double-time, then overtime or premium pay, then temporary employees, and then per diems are called-off before any part-time or full-time workers.
