Tonight, SEIU members and voters across the state decisively rejected a spending cap that would have crippled California's public services for years into the future. Voters have consistently indicated that they do not support cuts to education, higher education, healthcare, home care, and other social services, and we need our Governor and legislators to understand this and offer real solutions and real leadership.
Voters refused to accept a bad budget deal that would have compromised California's future. In addition, they refused to steal from programs intended to help children thrive and to help people with mental illness recover.
Now that voters have cleared the deck of false solutions, California still faces the difficult task of closing a huge deficit in the worst economy since the Great Depression.
This is going to take courage, creativity, and honest leadership--closer to what we've recently seen from Washington than what we're used to in Sacramento. But we know that Californians will support real solutions that seek to protect the things we value most: our children, our seniors, and our communities.
UHW-SEIU members will continue to support real solutions to the challenges we all face.
