Victory by SEIU-backed Judy Chu, CA 32nd Congressional Dist.

A significant victory came last night for SEIU-endorsed Congressional candidate and state Board of Equalization member Judy Chu.

Her victory party last night in Covina was a who's-who of local labor and California, L.A., and Eastside social and economic justice efforts, Chu's platform focused on healthcare for all, jobs and economic stimulus, immigration reform, EFCA and right to a voice at work, and voting rights.

She paid tribute to the power of coalitions in her victory speech and singled out her support from union members. She swept past several challengers to best the field in the race to replace former 32nd District Congresswoman Hilda U.S. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis.

SEIU endorsed early in this race and was a linchpin of Chu's victorious coalition, whose strength has propelled her to Washington. A July runoff will occur, since no candidate received an outright majority. But with only token GOP and Libertarian competition in this heavily Democratic district, the runoff is a formality.
