SEIU-UHW Members Protect 150 Jobs at Kaiser, Pickets Continue
Members who work for Kaiser Permanente have forged an agreement with management that protects the jobs of 150 Pharmacy workers targeted for layoffs in Northern California. "This new agreement means that not one Pharmacy worker will lose her or his job," said Cinnamon Amenes, who works at Kaiser Vallejo and served on the SEIU-UHW bargaining team. "We hope that this is the first in a series of agreements that take all layoffs off the table."
A 15 member bargaining team settled the agreement with Kaiser management last week, which was agreed to in response to pickets that more than 5,000 union members have attended since Kaiser announced plans to cut more than 1,300 jobs. The pickets will continue this week in Orange County, Sacramento, Santa Rosa and Fresno.

Evergreen Members 99% Strong for New Contract
SEIU-UHW members at five Evergreen nursing home facilities approved a strong new contract last week by a vote of 151 to 2. The agreement contains significant gains, including 3.5% pay increases in 2010 and 2011, as well as a 4% increase for 2009 (retroactive to January 2009), as well as improvements to healthcare, and strong new contract language against subcontracting. "I think this contract is a great example of what we can accomplish when we stay strong and stay united in our goals," said Brenda Villagomez, a member of the bargaining team. "I'm very excited that we stuck together and won a good contract."
