Working Families Propel Garamendi to Congressional Victory

SACRAMENTO, CA - The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) California applauded tonight's Special Election win by Lt. Gov. John Garamendi in the state's 10th Congressional District. Garamendi won a decisive victory in the campaign for the Congressional seat vacated by Congresswoman Ellen Tauscher. The following is a statement from SEIU California Executive Director Bill Lloyd:

"Lt. Governor Garamendi has been a lifetime champion for California's working families, college students, and our environment and we are proud to have him represent us in Washington. SEIU's working families stepped up to help elect Garamendi by walking precincts, making phone calls, and contributing their resources because we know that he will continue to be a leader who will fight to increase access to healthcare, protect consumers, and support working families.

"With Congress set to hold critical health care reform votes in the coming days, we are proud to have Congressman Garamendi standing up for us in Washington."

SEIU California is a coalition of over 700,000 janitors, social workers security officers, homecare workers, cafeteria workers, nurses and various classifications of city, county and state employees represented by SEIU local unions throughout California. They come together to build a better California by fighting to pass policies and elect candidates that fight for the issues working men and women care about such as affordable healthcare, good wages, a means to a good retirement, a healthy environment, education and stronger communities. They believe that by working together we can build a California that all working families can once again thrive in.
