Workers at Windsor Force Management to Finish Contract
After a long fight, SEIU-UHW members at Windsor Homes have settled a new contract once and for all.
"All of us being united made the difference," said Vilma Valencia, a RNA at Windsor Country Drive. "When it looked like management was trying to back out of our agreement, we showed them we were strong and can't be pushed around. When they knew we were ready to picket and take action, they came right to the bargaining table and we finished our contract."
Pratap Poddatoori Workers Win New Contract
After a series of tough negotiations with management, Pratap Poddatoori nursing home workers won a new three-year agreement with significant increases in wages and health care benefits. The agreement covers all four Poddatoori homes: Elmwood, Kyakameena, San Leandro and Willow Pass. Workers unanimously voted 108-0 to ratify the agreement on December 3, one day after reaching the tentative agreement with management.
Wage increases start with a $.50 increase effective back to February 16, 2009, and continue with another $.40 increase effective back to August 1st. "The wages we won are very good. We got 50 cents in February, now we're getting another 40 cents, which adds up to 90, and we're getting retro pay from August," said Marge Fairbanks, CNA and bargaining team member.
NUHW Would Not Be Allowed in Kaiser Coalition or LMP
Unions will not accept groups who win elections due to "raiding"
Southern California Kaiser workers in the Health Care Professionals, Psych-Social and AFN (Sunset registered nurse) units could not be part of the Coalition of Kaiser Permanente Unions or participate in national negotiations with Kaiser or in the Labor-Management Partnership (LMP) if they leave SEIU-UHW and join a new organization, the unions that make up the Coalition have determined.
The CKPU announcement reads, in part: "The Coalition will not support the application by any Union to join the Coalition or the (LMP) by virtue of gaining representation of Kaiser Permanente employees by raiding a constituent member union of the Coalition."
