This training program is geared for new stewards. Upon completion of our two-part Steward Training, stewards will have sharpened union representation and organizing skills.
PART 1:
Participants will become familiar with the values and history of SEIU-UHW West, the role and responsibilities of stewards, practice basic skills in understanding a contract, recognizing what is a grievance and what is not, investigating and writing a grievance and learn skills to effectively communicate with members and build support for the union around issues that are important to those who work in healthcare. All stewards are required to complete Basic Steward Training within 3 months of becoming a steward.
PART 2:
Participants will discuss, in depth, the roles and rights of stewards and practice skills in understanding a contract, recognizing what is an organizing issue and what is not, investigating a grievance, conducting a meeting with management and to effectively organize members. All stewards are required to successfully complete Investigating and Presenting Grievances within 12 months of becoming a steward.
