DUBLIN, CA -Employees of Prison Health Services will picket on Tuesday, February 9 from 2 - 4:30 p.m. The workers provide health care at two East Bay correctional facilities: Glenn Dyer Detention Facility in Oakland and the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin. The informational picket will raise awareness of their efforts to negotiate a new contract. The contract is critical to keeping the experienced correctional nurses--people who know how to do a difficult job under challenging and dangerous circumstances.
Prison Health Services (PHS) contracts with Alameda County for the medical care it provides at the facility, and the budget PHS submitted to the County includes a 10% increase in staff costs in light of these negotiations. Still, they are refusing to offer workers a reasonable raise and are trying to charge workers 6 times more than they currently pay toward their health care costs.
Almost 70% of PHS workers have already signed a petition saying they will strike if they have to. If a settlement isn't reached soon, more pickets are likely.
