Patient Care is New Star at Cedars Sinai, As New Union Contract Helps Hospital, Workers Maintain Quality Patient Care

Raises and protections in agreement strengthens staff retention



LOS ANGELES – Licensed vocational nurses, certified nurse assistants, environmental services technicians and other caregivers who are members of Service Employees International Union – United Healthcare Workers West (SEIU-UHW), at Cedars Sinai Medical Center have ratified a new union contract that will help the local hospital maintain high standards for patient care.

The three-year contract, ratified decisively Friday evening, covers more than 1600 staff and includes raises of $1.40 over the next three years, minimum 2% annual merit increase, protects health insurance, and job security and a ban on subcontracting jobs.

“We are so excited about this new contract. It recognizes our commitment to and our role in making Cedars one of the best hospitals in which to get care,” said Yvette Clark, a certified nurse assistant at the medical center.
 
The contract includes:

  • Minimum $1.40 wage raise: immediate $0.50 (up to 4.54%) increase upon ratification, and $0.45 (up to 4.1%) increase April 2011 and 2012.
  • Minimum 2% merit increases: 2% merit raise in April 2010, 2011, and 2012.
  • Job security: maintains language banning sub-contracting.
  • Protects healthcare: maintains employer paid health insurance.
