OAKLAND - More than 350 healthcare workers in two nursing homes and a hospital in Northern California will stay with their current union, the Service Employees International Union - United Healthcare Workers West (SEIU-UHW) - in another rejection of the National Union of Healthcare Workers (NUHW), the group started by former SEIU-UHW President Sal Rosselli and other former union officials.
The workers' decision brings to more than 72,000 - or 94% -- the number of SEIU-UHW members who have rejected NUHW and chosen to stay united.
Workers at Generations Pavilion and Generation Heights, nursing homes in Daly City, resoundingly voted to keep SEIU-UHW as their union. The vote was 148 for SEIU-UHW, 43 for NUHW, and 14 for no union. At the same time, to avoid an overwhelming defeat at Sutter Lakeside in Lakeport, NUHW withdrew its petition with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) and called off the election just two days before the July 28 vote.
"I voted for SEIU-UHW so we continue to stand united," says Norma Magno, a certified nursing assistant at Generations Pavilion nursing home. "We need a real, strong union for our job protection and that is SEIU-UHW."
"They knew they couldn't win so they quit! Now there is no election, SEIU-UHW is still our union, and our contract is in effect," said Paula Capps, a pharmacist and shop steward at Sutter Lakeside. "We can move on, build our union and deliver the best patient care."
Workers at Sutter Santa Rosa are scheduled to vote August 2. A significant majority of the workers have pledged their support to SEIU-UHW, and NUHW is expected to withdraw from the election prior to the vote.
Another 40,000 SEIU-UHW members at Kaiser facilities across the state are also expected to vote in a mail ballot election soon. Despite petitioning for the election in June, NUHW is now stalling the process, refusing to sign the paperwork that would set the election in motion.
