SEIU-UHW Members Launch Ballot Initiatives to Improve Healthcare

As part of "Let's Get Healthy California," SEIU-UHW members prepare to file ballot initiatives aimed at improving healthcare.

SEIU-UHW members filed two statewide ballot initiatives with the California Attorney General that give consumers needed transparency on hospital costs, end overcharging for hospital services and ensure increased charity care for the neediest.

As healthcare costs continue to rise, and access to care becomes increasingly difficult for low-income families to afford, the initiatives address these issues head on. The first initiative will keep hospitals from grossly overcharging for services and supplies, while the second will ensure that nonprofit hospitals—which pay no taxes—are providing charitable care for the neediest Californians.

“As healthcare workers we want to make a difference,” said Nisa Walker, an SEIU-UHW member and healthcare worker in Sacramento. “These initiatives give consumers transparency and increase care for the needy. It is exactly what we should demand and expect from healthcare companies we exempt from taxes because they have a charitable mission.”

These statewide ballot initiatives are one piece of SEIU-UHW’s “Let’s Get Healthy California.” We are working to lower costs and improve the quality of healthcare for all Californians.
