SEIU-UHW members turned out in record numbers to keep SEIU-UHW as their union on Thursday, January 5th–but the ballots weren’t counted as planned.
Unable to face yet another loss–El Camino Hospital management broke state labor law (again) and refused to count workers’ ballots after the election.
SEIU-UHW members are filing charges with the Public Employment Relations Board (PERB) against El Camino Hospital for clearly violating the Employee Relations Ordinance (ERO) Agreement and breaking the law by not counting ballots Thursday night.
“It’s no big surprise that management would stoop to preventing us from counting our election ballots. We know keeping our union, SEIU-UHW, is the best way to protect working families and patient care in our community.
Management knows we’re going to win and they can’t handle the truth–we want to keep our union. Workers flocked to the polls–not just those already at work but members who were off, out on disability and even some on crutches came to vote.
Our plan to win is working. We’ve been holding management accountable every step of the way.
We are legally challenging the El Camino Hospital Board’s illegal impasse of the contract and now management’s election violations. And, we’re filing a special district ballot initiative to cap executive pay and bonuses at the hospital. We are staying united in our union and continuing to stand up for our members, our families and our community.”
