Our new executive board–the 340 members elected statewide to represent us and help us shape the future of our union–met in Fresno in early April to build member leadership, grow our union, take action to fix the healthcare crisis, and win a better future for us all.
“I’m excited to get out there and make sure there’s healthcare for everyone. People are giving up their healthcare just to pay the bills, and it shouldn’t be like that.”
Leland Ferguson, Kaiser North Hollywood
“Most of the young mothers I work with are afraid of what the state will cut next. If we have a stronger union, we’ll have more strength to make a change.”
Eva Padilla, Tiburcio Vasquez Health Center
“In my County, only the home care workers with more than 60 hours get health insurance, so I don’t have healthcare. That’s why we’re here in this fight.”
Leticia Gamboa, San Joaquin Home Care
“If you’re in pain and you’re hurting, you shouldn’t have to think about how you’re going to get care. I want to help change the system through the union and make sure everyone has affordable healthcare. If we grow and have more members, we can make sure legislators know that everyone needs healthcare.”
Darnita Garry, Sutter Alta Bates Summit Medical Center
“We need everyone to get active and stay committed to helping get healthcare to people who don’t have insurance.”Ben Marquez, Kaiser Sunset
“We’re lucky because we have healthcare, but it’s still expensive. I wanted to add my husband and that was $406 a paycheck. That’s a lot of money for us, and we couldn’t afford it so he’s not covered.”
Ria Lancaster, Parkview Healthcare Center
“If we are going to keep what we have, and win a better future for ourselves and our patients, we need to organize the thousands of nursing home, home care, and hospital workers who don’t have a union.”
Rudy Vallin, DOC Seton Medical Center
“Just as any country or organization grows beyond what it was when it first formed, that is what we are being asked to do. It’s up to us, SEIU-UHW members and leaders, to make the country fit for our families and communities.”
Karen Timmons, Sonoma Home Care
“Our union needs do more, faster to represent our members, and we have a plan to do that. We’re going to communicate more, involve members in solutions, and train more member-leaders to help us get it all done.”
Jon Duff, Kaiser Vallejo
“I want to help build leaders and make the union more powerful.”
Tatiana Posohina, San Francisco Home Care
“I’m going back home and talk to everyone in my hospital, and other hospitals in my area, to educate members. Then we need to work to organize healthcare workers who don’t have a union. There’s strength in numbers.”
Susie Boedecker, CHW Mercy San Juan
