Caregivers at Tenet Hospitals Overwhelmingly Vote to Approve New Union Contract That Provides Quality Patient Care

Oakland, Calif.–Caregivers at nine Tenet hospitals, who are members of Service Employees International Union, United Healthcare Workers – West, overwhelmingly approved a new union contract Friday night that will help the hospitals maintain high standards for patient care.
“It’s crucial that I can support my family during these tough economic times and have a voice at work to provide the best care possible to my patients. That’s why I’m so proud that my co-workers and I stood together as SEIU-UHW members and won guaranteed raises, protected our health benefits and secured our jobs with a great new contract,” said Christine Fields, an operating room scheduler at Sierra Vista Medical Center in San Luis Obispo.
Certified Nurse Assistants, Respiratory Therapists, ER Technicians and other hospital staff voted for five days at the following hospitals in California: Los Alamitos Medical Center, Desert Regional Medical Center, Doctors Hospital of Manteca, Doctors Medical Center, JFK Memorial Hospital, Lakewood Regional Medical Center, San Roman Regional Medical Center, Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center and Twin Cities Community Hospital.The contract was approved by a 98% majority vote.
The three-year contract covers 3,000 staff and includes a strong voice for caregivers on patient care issues, guaranteed raises of up to 18% compounded over the next three years, employer-paid health insurance, and a ban on subcontracting jobs.
The union agreement includes:

  • Quality of Care Committees that ensure a strong voice for caregivers on key patient care and staffing issues.
  • Guaranteed raises for all full-time and part-time employees of up to 4.5% per year – July 2011, July 2012, July 2013. An additional 4.5% raise in June 30, 2014, for anyone still below proper place on scale. With maximums, employees below proper place on pay scale will get up to 18% over the 3 years.
  • Job security: maintains language banning sub-contracting and provides additional protections for employees if hospital is sold.
  • Protected healthcare coverage: maintains quality family health insurance coverage free of premiums for full-time and part-time employees.
