[March 6, 2014] LOS ANGELES – With less than a month to go for the public to sign up for health coverage, a union of healthcare workers reached a milestone yesterday by enrolling their 5,000th Californian in health coverage this year. The members of SEIU-United Healthcare Workers West (SEIU-UHW) achieved the mark at an enrollment event they sponsored in Lynwood, and they have another 50 fairs scheduled before the March 31 enrollment deadline.
“Our mission is to improve healthcare access in California, and the easiest way for us to do that is by signing up people for health coverage,” said Dave Regan, president of SEIU-UHW. “It’s gratifying to see the smiles on new enrollees’ faces when it sinks in that they’ll be visiting a doctor for the first time in months or years.”
Of those who enrolled this year with the union’s assistance, roughly 70 percent gained health coverage through Medi-Cal and 30 percent under Covered California. The enrollment events have included joint efforts with elected officials and community organizations, and feature sustained focus on Los Angeles, Sacramento and San Joaquin Counties.
All of SEIU-UHW’s enrollment fairs are free and open to the public. To view a schedule of its upcoming events throughout California, visit www.seiu-uhw.org/fairs.
Each person enrolling needs to bring: 1) proof of identity such as a driver’s license or passport: 2) proof of address such as a piece of postmarked mail: 3) proof of income such as tax filings from 2012 or the last 30 days of paystubs; and 4) proof of citizenship such as a birth certificate or permanent resident card. Each person enrolling must also provide date of birth, social security number, and home ZIP code.
The deadline for open enrollment is March 31.
