SEIU-UHW members in the Kaiser Permanente Medical Review (KPIF) Dept located at MSSA Burbank just negotiated important improvements to customer service—and a resulting pay increase of $3 to $5 per hour.
“It has been a long fight, but our members stayed strong and remained united. We have the best team, and we fought side by side and we finally won,” said Carolyn “Carlie” Shannon and Letesha Butts.
Members met over several months with management about changes taking place within our department in response to new healthcare laws. The main goals of the operational changes were to improve KPIF underwriting quality and service by establishing a tiered underwriting process.
Another change was to consolidate medical review into a three-tiered structure. This change would created the need to reclassify eight medical review clerks into “medical reviewers”—a bump in responsibility that also meant a bump in pay!
