Catholic Hospital to Lay Off 44 Healthcare Workers in Daly City Before Christmas

Nurses, Caregivers to Protest, Call for Humane Alternatives to Job Cuts
DALY CITY, CA – One of Daly City’s largest employers, Seton Medical Center, is poised to lay off 44 nurses and other caregivers before Christmas. Caregivers will protest in front of the Catholic-affiliated hospital, 1900 Sullivan Avenue in Daly City, at 12 Noon on Wednesday, November 17 to call for humane alternatives to job cuts.

“No one should be laid off when there are alternatives–especially not this season,” said Marietes Del Pena, a licensed vocational nurse at Seton for 19 years who is on the layoff list. “We want Seton to join us in the spirit of caring and supporting families and good jobs in our community.” Del Pena and other Service Employees International Union-United Healthcare Workers West (SEIU-UHW) members have been negotiating over alternatives to layoffs for five weeks. The jobs cuts are slated to take place in December before Christmas.
Many hospitals have considered layoffs in this tough economy and arrived at humane alternatives. Just last month, 119 layoffs were avoided at El Camino Hospital after SEIU-UHW members worked with management on a reorganization that prevented job cuts. Last year, when Kaiser Permanente announced 1,700 layoffs, SEIU-UHW members worked with management on alternatives and as a result, not a single healthcare worker lost a job. Many of these workers received training for new skills and some even received higher-paying jobs.
