What is Obamacare?

The Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, is the greatest expansion of healthcare in 50 years. In California alone, five million uninsured people will become eligible for free and low-cost healthcare coverage in 2014. Obamacare ends annual and lifetime caps for health plans, allows children to stay on their parents’ health plan until age 26, and requires that all health plans cover hospitalization, prescription drugs, preventive care, emergency services, pediatric care, and much more.

What is SEIU-UHW doing about Obamacare?

Healthcare workers are uniquely qualified to improve wellness in our communities–and SEIU-UHW members are doing just that by connecting California families to Obamacare.  For over a year, we’ve been hosting enrollment fairs, knocking on doors, and canvassing our communities to ensure that every single person who is eligible for healthcare under Obamacare gets covered. Check out the great work we’ve already done in Southern California!

President’s Immigration Action Opens Pathway to Healthcare for Large Number of Californians

[Nov. 21, 2014] OAKLAND, Calif. – In addition to providing millions of families with a historic opportunity to come out of the shadows and into the light of our economy and society, President Obama’s administrative action on immigration today also clears the way for a large new group of Californians to sign up for healthcare under Medi-Cal.

“Healthcare workers in our union are committed to bringing healthcare to all Californians, so we are ready to do everything we can to sign up this new group of people,” said Dave Regan, president of SEIU-United Healthcare Workers West (SEIU-UHW). “This is a big step forward for these Californians, but also for improved public health in our state.”

“We congratulate the President for taking this step, and urge Congress to follow suit by passing broad, commonsense immigration reform,” Regan added.

Last year, SEIU-UHW members signed up more than 12,000 Californians for healthcare either through Covered California or expanded Medi-Cal under the Affordable Care Act. With the open enrollment period for the ACA having started Nov. 15, SEIU-UHW members will hold 80 enrollment events across the state before the end of the enrollment period on Feb. 14, 2015.

In the coming weeks, SEIU-UHW will be working out the details to enable members and volunteers to sign up people covered by the President’s order.

Those who can benefit from this administrative action are encouraged to visit iAmerica.org, a new resource that helps families learn about the President’s administrative action, find out whether they qualify, and safely make their way through the application process. Organizations partnering with iAmerica include SEIU, Mi Familia Vota, NALEO, Immigration Advocates Network, the Center for Popular Democracy, Catholic Legal Immigration Network, the National Immigration Law Center, Univision, Entrevision and TV Azteca.

Northridge Leaders – Healthcare Heroes

SEIU-UHW leaders from West Hills and Los Robles hit the pavement to make the February 1 enrollment fair in Northridge a big success. They painted the town purple with fliers to turnout churchgoers, mall shoppers, and mobile home park dwellers to our event. They even got local businesses to post the fliers and to share them with co-workers. We send a shout out to our healthcare heroes: Sue DeNardo, Byron Abal, Crizaldo Fuecincillo, Ernesto Ruelas, Irma Rodriguez, Luis Barreto, Jose Martinez, Jose Miramontes, Jose Fernandez, Miguel Guifarro, Jose Castro, and George Palacios.

Healthcare workers announce 90-day ACA enrollment blitz

[Jan. 8, 2014] After successfully connecting almost 5,000 Californians to health coverage last year, healthcare workers announced a 90-day statewide blitz to enroll thousands more before the Affordable Care Act’s March 31 sign-up deadline for 2014.

Members of SEIU-United Healthcare Workers West (SEIU-UHW) are planning nearly 60 healthcare enrollment events from Redding to Riverside that are free and open to the public.

“Every day we see people from across the state come into hospitals and emergency rooms without health coverage and we know the anxiety it causes for them and their families,” said Dave Regan, SEIU-UHW president. “By gaining access to medical care for the first time in months or years, these families and individuals will improve their peace of mind and help make California a healthier state.”

Union members began their efforts in 2012, when they enrolled more than 1,000 Los Angeles residents in Medi-Cal. Since then, as part of the Affordable Care Act, they have enrolled an additional 5,000 people either in Medi-Cal or Covered California, the state’s health insurance marketplace.

The enrollment events have included joint efforts with state legislators and various community organizations, and featured sustained efforts in areas such as South Los Angeles and the Boyle Heights neighborhood in Los Angeles.

Uninsured individuals have until March 31 to enroll in a health coverage plan.

200 More Insured, Right Before Obamacare Deadline

Nearly 200 people in Northern and Southern California enrolled for healthcare coverage at one of our two Obamacare enrollment fairs in Bell and Vallejo. That’s more Californians with access to preventive care, life-saving medication, and long overdue check-ups. We’re helping California get healthy, one family at a time.

Thanks to SEIU-UHW member volunteers like Manny Hernandez, our Obamacare events are a success. “I keep coming back as a volunteer to see people’s faces when they get enrolled in health insurance. It is worth every hour spent here.” For Hernandez, healthcare coverage has a personal connection. “My sister is 26 and needed insurance. She did not know where to turn.” Hernandez took his sister to the SEIU-UHW event in Baldwin Park on December 12 to make sure she received the coverage she needs. Diabetes runs in Hernandez’s family and he knows that free preventative care is vital to the health and wellness of his family and others.”That’s all people need—one chance to get the coverage they need.”

Ask Pauline What Obamacare Means to Her Family

“When I heard abPauline and Leland Hutton_300wout this chance to make sure my friends and family were signed up for healthcare, I jumped on it. I brought my son Leland and my two nephews to the enrollment fair that SEIU-UHW members put on. Leland has asthma and is too old to be on our family healthcare, so he’s been struggling to pay for his medications. But tonight, SEIU-UHW members helped my son and my two nephews get enrolled. I know how important coverage is—I mean, we see it every day at work, right? Tonight really inspired me. Now I’m ready to step up and volunteer at future events to help others get covered!”
