2017 SEIU-UHW Leadership General Election

Responsibility…Leadership…Accountability…Teamwork

Leadership Matters:  The primary role of our executive board is inspiring and motivating members into action–leaders who are passionate about devoting time and talent to building a leadership team within their facility By communicating and challenging us,  our executive board sets out the vision and program of  our union and encourages us to exercise our leadership potential. It’s up to us to nominate and elect those candidates whom we believe can best lead our union to achieve healthcare justice — better jobs and better health for our community.

Election information is posted on this website, available at all SEIU-UHW offices, available from SEIU-UHW representatives, and posted at facility and area locations.

[NOTE: All links to forms and instruction documents were removed on March 30, 2017 to prevent accidental reference to outdated documents during future Executive Board elections.]

Our Ballots are in the Mail, Now What?

Ballots for all members to vote in the 2017 Executive Board Election mailed on Feb. 27 to the last known address of all members. Check your mail box in the next few days to make sure you receive yours.

Members should get a ballot based on the facility at which their last regular dues were received.

Voters who do not receive a ballot by mail or are in need of a replacement ballot can request one by calling the American Arbitration Association (AAA) at 1-800-529-5218 (Monday to Friday, 7AM to 7PM Pacific Standard Time) or by emailing a request to ulerios@adr.org. Be prepared to give your name, division, employer and employee identification number for security purposes. Deadline for requesting a replacement ballot is March 8, 2017.

As provided in the SEIU-UHW Bylaws, only members in good standing are eligible to vote in this election. If you are not a member in good standing, you may contact the Membership Department at 510-251-1250. If you bring your account current, you will be eligible to vote in this election. (And of course always keep your dues up to date!)

Mail ballots must be received at the San Francisco AAA Office by March 15.

Additional election details are contained in the Nomination and Election Notice that was mailed to members on January 6 and posted in your facility.

Meet the Candidates – Voter’s Guide

Meet the candidates for the 2017 SEIU-UHW Leadership General Election. You can find candidate statements and photos from those candidates who submitted them by clicking on “Union-Wide” and then clicking on your division below:  Hospital Division or  Kaiser Division

Our election guidelines allow for candidates to run as a “slate.”  This means that the members of a “slate” share the same vision or “platform” for leading the union. With a large executive board such as ours, where it is impossible to know every member running, it provides voters with a piece of voter education—knowing what candidates stand for, even if a voter does not personally know all of them.

Members may also run as individual candidates and all candidates can share their vision and platform for the union by submitting a statement for the voter guide—another important piece of voter education.

Voters can vote for individual candidates, all members on a slate, or some members of a slate—whomever they believe will best lead the union provided that the voter carefully follows the ballot instructions and the total number of votes does not exceed the total to be elected to that position.

The far left hand column on the ballot tells you the total number of positions open for each office, for example: Vote for ONE (1) only;  or Vote for no more than THREE (3).

The candidate who receives the MOST votes for his/her position wins.  In constituencies with multiple seats, for example, three (3), the three candidates with the most votes win the positions.
