The ballots have been counted and St. Louise workers voted 96 to 72 to stay in SEIU-UHW and kick out NUHW.

"Finally, we can move on from this NUHW nightmare and get back to taking care of patients," says Jaime Avelar, a food service assistant at St. Louise Hospital. "I am really looking forward to working with all of my co-workers to rebuild our union to fight for what is best for our hospital and our patients."

On June 8 and 9, SEIU-UHW members at St. Louise in Gilroy and O'Connor Hospital in San Jose will have the opportunity to affirm support for our union and kick NUHW out of their facilities once and for all.  Members have signed petitions, held events and spoke to the media about their desire to end the division NUHW has caused in their hospitals.

950 Caregivers at St. Francis Medical Center Win Election Campaign Over NUHW, Bringing to More than 1,800 Workers in Past Two Weeks Who Are Staying United in SEIU-UHW

LYNWOOD, CA – More than 950 caregivers at St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood won their election campaign today over the organization started by former SEIU-UHW President Sal Rosselli and other former union officials.

LYNWOOD, CA-- The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has scheduled an election at St. Francis Medical Center so that healthcare workers can vote to keep their union, the Service Employees International Union-United Healthcare Workers West (SEIU-UHW) and reject an outside group formed by ousted union officials. The election will take place in the next 30 days.

Finally, our time has come once and for all to put the division of the past behind us and protect our pay, benefits, and job security by reaffirming SEIU-UHW as our union.

The National Labor Relations Board will soon be scheduling an election - hopefully in the next two months - so we can vote to keep our union, make sure our contract is secure, and maintain our strong, united voice at St Louise Hospital.

The election is happening because another organization, called NUHW, filed a petition last year to "decertify" our union, putting our future in danger. We are asking that the election be scheduled as soon as possible so we can put the matter to rest by voting to keep SEIU-UHW.

Unity and strength deliver pay raises, retro, healthcare protection

The hard work and unity of SEIU-UHW members at all five Daughters of Charity Hospitals paid off as they voted by a 95% margin to approve a new contract that improves their wages and benefits, delivers full retro pay, and maintains high standards for patient care.

Today, our SEIU-UHW bargaining team reached a settlement on a great new contract.

During our negotiations, Daughters of Charity workers focused on a list of priorities for improvements in our next contract. Today, we can proudly report that our SEIU-UHW Bargaining Team has delivered on those goals.

Key Facility Meetings This Week

At this past Thursday's bargaining, our SEIU-UHW bargaining team delivered our majority petition to management highlighting our priorities. This helped us make significant progress. Here are the highlights:

  • Agreement on 403b match for Seton
  • Agreement on vision and dental for St. Francis
  • Agreement not to extend management rights

Same Employer, Same Quality Care...

Why not the same benefits for all DOC employees?

Every Daughters of Charity patient receives the same high quality of care--no matter which hospital facility they visit. So why does Management treat us differently depending on the facility where we work? It makes no sense.

Beginning mid-September, three of our co-workers will be taking three-months of "Lost-Time" from their jobs at the hospitals and working full-time for our union as Member Representatives. The three of them will be focused on member engagement and leadership development to get us ready for bargaining, improve lines of communication between SEIU-UHW members and Management, and help build new strength within our union.

Good Contract or No Contract!

Daughters of Charity SEIU-UHW Negotiations Update

Union negotiators from all 5 Daughters of Charity hospitals met for 2 days of negotiations with hospital management on August 5 and 6. Our team walked away extremely disappointed that management did not make significant movement on our key proposals for a fair contract: No progress on retro pay, wages, health insurance, or 403b match. This is not acceptable.
