Why do we have a Professional Council?
In response to our growing membership of Professional and Technical health care employees, our Executive Board has begun a far-reaching program to better address the needs and concerns of these members.
How is the Council Structured?
Specialty councils were established for each discipline, including Nursing, Respiratory, Imaging, Laboratory and Pharmacy. More specialty councils can be created as needed. The Pro Council is meeting on a quarterly basis and breaking into specialties. Specialties can also meet between those dates as needed.
The Specialty Councils elect delegates to sit on the larger Professional Council, which includes representatives from each discipline throughout the union.
What Are the Goals of the Council?
- To advance the interests of SEIU-UHW's professional and technical membership at the work site, before the federal legislature, state legislature, state health care licensing boards, and other state health care regulators.
- To address issues concerning contract language, staffing levels, scope of practice, continuing education, and professional development.
- To provide hands on support and training for member leaders to participate in formulating and advocating for legislative and regulatory measures and professional development programs to protect and enhance their scope of practice.
- To assist division and facility Stewards' councils in formulating the union's position with employers regarding staffing levels, job design, and work organization.
- To support and assist in the organizing of all healthcare workers including Technical and Professional employees.
- To share and coordinate information on industry trends and how they specifically affect Professional and Technical employees.
Why Should You Get Involved?
The SEIU-UHW Executive Board has devoted substantial resources, energy, time and staff to the launching of the Professional Council. But the success of the Council depends on the involvement of rank and file members of our union. It is the Nurses, Respiratory Therapists, Imaging Technicians, Pharmacists and Clinical Lab Scientists who have the knowledge, skills and experience to set the right course for the Professional and Technical Council. This is an exciting time, so get on board!
