Stand up for the Piedmont 38

Earlier this month, caregivers at Piedmont Gardens went on a 5 day strike in response to management's violation of federal labor laws, including illegally firing union supporters and unilaterally changing work rules. When the workers tried to return to their jobs Saturday after the scheduled 5-day action, 38 of them were told they had been permanently replaced by untrained, temporary workers.

Workers have been struggling to negotiate a new contract with American Baptist Homes of the West (ABHOW) since February. The workers have made common-sense proposals including modest economic improvements, but management has insisted on harmful proposals that put workers and frail and elderly residents at risk.

In a major election victory, workers at Driftwood Healthcare Center Nursing Home have overwhelmingly voted to join SEIU-UHW. The Santa Cruz nursing home is the first newly organized facility to join SEIU-UHW since our trusteeship in January 2009.

"I voted for SEIU-UHW so my family can have the benefits of a better life" said Charity Bagwell, a CNA at the Santa Cruz facility.

After management replaces 38 workers with inexperienced temporary staff, community brings concerns to Pleasanton corporate headquarters

Oakland/Pleasanton - Caregivers and residents of Oakland senior community Piedmont Gardens and will rally at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 18, to support quality resident care and stand behind 38 caregivers who were illegally fired and replaced with unskilled temporary workers. Supporters will also deliver a letter to CEO David Ferguson signaling their disgust with the corporation's behavior.

OAKLAND - Hundreds of caregivers at Piedmont Gardens and their supporters will rally at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, August 12, to support quality resident care and stand behind 38 caregivers who were illegally fired when they tried to return to work Saturday after a 5-day unfair labor practice strike.

Protest Policies that Force Them to Work Sick


Oakland, CA - On Monday, August 2 beginning at 5:00 a.m., certified nurse assistants and other healthcare workers will begin a five-day strike at Piedmont Gardens and Grand Lake Gardens assisted living centers to protest policies that hurt workers and endanger residents.

On July 27, 238 workers at two Generations nursing homes in Daly City voted to stay united in SEIU-UHW by more than a 3-to-1 margin in a decertification election brought on by the National Union of Healthcare Workers (NUHW), the organization formed by former SEIU-UHW leaders who were ousted for misusing millions in dues money.


"Now that we have the NUHW distraction out of the way we can push forward and negotiate the best wage reopener ever!" said Maria Victoria Tuason, a CNA at Generations Heights.

SAN FRANCISCO – Another 200 Service Employees International Union – United Healthcare Workers West (SEIU-UHW) caregivers at three nursing homes – Central Gardens Convalescent Hospital in San Francisco, Millbrae Serra Convalescent Hospital in Millbrae, and Mission Bay Convalescent Hospital in San Francisco – won their election Friday over the National Union of Healthcare Workers (NUHW), the organization started by former SEIU-UHW President Sal Rosselli and other former union officials.
