Dear Brother Rosselli, Sister Emslie and Brother Rodriguez:
I received a letter from your office dated January 12, 2009 to President Stern which mistakenly asserts that the SEIU International is "talking to Tenet about concessions in California." I want to assure you that this is absolutely not true. The International Union has not -- and is not currently -- engaging Tenet without the leadership involvement of any SEIU local that represents Tenet workers, including UHW-W.
The International Union has a history of working closely with the leadership of the locals representing Tenet workers. For example, last year, as you know, the International Union worked closely with UHW-W and 121RN on Tenet's sale of the Encino-Tarzana Regional Medical Center. Our combined efforts ensured that the interests of our members were protected in that transaction.
Recently, Tenet contacted leaders at SEIU International, Florida Healthcare Union, 121RN and, as you note in your letter, UHW-W, requesting a meeting to discuss Tenet's current financial condition. As a courtesy to Tenet, on January 15, 2009, elected leaders of the Florida Healthcare Union--FHU's Secretary-Treasurer and worker leaders elected to FHU's executive board, along with legal counsel and FHU's Division Director--met with Tenet to hear the company's economic presentation. This was not a bargaining session, but rather a listening session only.
The FHU leaders made clear to Tenet that they were representing only their Florida members. There is no basis for believing that this meeting involved the Tenet-California contract in any respect. It did not.
I trust that you will provide this response to the UHW-W members in the Tenet Hospitals
Sincerely,
Mary Kay Henry, SEIU
Executive Vice President
