I’m thrilled at the possibility of representing the almost 700 medical social workers of Kaiser Permanente. For 10 years I’ve worked beside you, represented many of you as a steward, and diligently advocated for the educational needs of our unique discipline. If elected, I will professionally represent and diligently advocate for our bargaining unit. I was born into a family from the Rural South who made many sacrifices so that I could achieve and excel. My parents instilled the value of social responsibility and reminded me that I have a duty to myself and those around me. They were teaching me social justice ethics and values.
As social workers we are tasked with linking patients to resources, advocating for equity, and promoting personal efficacy and autonomy – also known as social justice! Social and healthcare justice matters tremendously to me. Fighting for the rights of others who are oppressed and/or disenfranchised is an obligation. Whether I am supporting voter education through my sorority, advocating for women in politics through my political organizations, advocating for education benefits for Kaiser Social Workers, or volunteering with our union community division, social and healthcare justice are a part of my day-to-day life!
