Political Victories:

Member Power is Political Power

We can’t succeed as a union island in a sea of nonunion healthcare. That’s why growth is a critical part of our plan to win for workers. Here are some of the ways our political strength has helped SEIU-UHW to grow.

Lifelong Medical Centers – 2021

Over 500 workers at over a dozen major community health clinics from Oakland to Richmond organized to win Union representation in late 2021. LifeLong management had worked with UHW in the past to win a campaign which created County and City funding to build and operate a clinic in an underserved community elsewhere in the East Bay. LifeLong management agreed to cooperate so that the workers could hold a prompt Union election without a divisive, expensive campaign against their choice. The workers won their election to gain UHW representation with a 99% Yes vote in January 2022, and they are preparing to win their best wages, benefits and work conditions ever while forming a campaign with one of the largest clinic systems in California to get increased finding from State government for the vital safety net health care services they provide.

Vibra Healthcare 2021

Workers at Kentfield Hospital organized their union with SEIU UHW in 2020 and bargained their first contract through 2021. The workers’ goal was to win a contract that addressed critical staffing shortages, improve retention and patient care. Elected officials met with members of the bargaining team, wrote letters to the CEO and attended actions at the facility.
