Winning for Dialysis Workers and Patients

AB 290, our bill to stop the dialysis industry from scamming the healthcare system was signed into law by Gov. Newsom in October 2019.

This is a victory we all made happen. In 2016, a brave group of dialysis workers made the decision to take on the multi-billion dollar dialysis giants, DaVita and Fresenius, and form their union with SEIU-UHW. Dialysis patients joined them in speaking out about patient care problems and joined our union of patients. In 2018, our full union went all in to take on the industry and challenge its predatory business model. We collected thousands of signatures to put Prop 8 on the ballot, and passed SB 1156 through the legislature.

The dialysis industry broke spending records to fight us and defend their obscene profits.  On election day Prop 8 didn’t pass, and SB 1156 was vetoed by Gov. Brown, but with those bills we built the groundwork for this victory:

  • We exposed the dirty truth about an industry operating in the shadows. Their obscene profits, filthy clinics, and ongoing legal troubles became big news.
  • State legislators who weren’t familiar with dialysis and were upset and ready to take action.
  • We elected more Healthcare Heroes to state offices, including our governor.
  • Then, in 2019 Assemblymember Wood introduced AB 290 and dialysis patients and workers talked to legislators about it all this year.

With the passage of this bill, all that hard work has paid off. Every single SEIU-UHW member should be proud.
