Verity Health Systems declared bankruptcy in August 2018. In Los Angeles County, this affects St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood and St. Vincent Medical Center, hospitals that serve thousands of patients in their communities. St. Francis Hospital is a level two trauma center serving some of the city’s most vulnerable populations while St. Vincent provides vital cardiac and cancer care. SEIU-UHW is fighting to make sure these hospitals stay open to serve the patients who rely on them and continue to provide good healthcare jobs for the caregivers who take pride in working there.

“I started working at St. Vincent Medical Center because my mother got care there. I saw the careful way they took care of her and I wanted to be a part of making people feel better. In the five years I’ve been there, I’ve taken pride in the communities we serve, a large homeless and LGBTQI population. We are a safe haven for a lot of people, providing medical care but also food and shelter options when they get discharged. The uncertainty of our hospital’s future with this sale has me and my co-workers worried about where our patients will go. We all need St. Vincent Medical Center to continue playing its role, for patients, and for all of us dedicated caregivers.”
