SEIU-UHW members made their voices heard across the state as media outlets continued with their North to South coverage of the Kaiser pickets.

In the Bay Area, the San Francisco Examiner spoke to several members at the picket there, including bone-density technician Treena Simmons, medical assistant Edith Hurtado, and supply chain technician Raul Sanchezwho said, “It was hard enough making sure that the hospital had enough supplies during the pandemic as supply chains choked. But now it’s even tougher with less staff available to help.”

The Modesto Bee produced a two-minute video of the picket on their website. Intensive care unit assistant Henry Perez was featured in the video, saying, “Staff us safely, so we’re not doing the job of three or four people! We are united for all and we’re going to continue to fight for the safety of our patients… We are not backing down.”

In Lancaster, The Antelope Valley Press talked to licensed vocational nurse, Aly Sanchez who said, ” “The rising cost of living has made it harder for us to afford to live where we work. Many of us are seeking out better-paying jobs or leaving the healthcare field altogether.”

And Estrella TV covered the pickets in Los Angeles!

@seiu_uhw Many shifts we do the work of 2-3 people. We are burnt out and exhausted. To top it off rising costs of living are making it harder to afford housing near our place of work. That is why we’re out here picketing at 50 Kaiser Permanente facilities across California. #United4All #HotLaborSummer #HotUnionSummer ♬ Rise Up (We Win Together) – @jazzycjones

From Southern California to the Central Valley, to Sacramento to the Bay Area, SEIU-UHW Kaiser members dominated yesterday’s news cycle, racking up more than 70 mentions in print and broadcast media before 8 AM alone.

Today SEIU-UHW members continued to generate a ton of press coverage, including features in every major TV station in all the large markets in California. We’ve racked up over 300 print, digital, TV and radio mentions!

The San Joaquin Valley Sun featured UHW member Lori Pimentel of Kaiser Vacaville: “We’re demanding that Kaiser put patient care over profits and provide safe staffing at all their facilities.”

The San Francisco Examiner featured UHW member Roy Ongpin, “Staffing has been so critically low that many workers have gotten fed up and left… Kaiser needs to invest in its workforce and do what it takes to attract and retain healthcare workers who provide quality patient care.”

The Sacramento Bee featured a video that included an interview with UHW member Georgette Bradford. “Invest in us so we can continue giving the right care, the quality care to our members. Stop treating us like machines and we’ll continue to give high quality care.”

And down south, KTLA 5 – Los Angeles featured footage from the Panorama City picket.

@seiu_uhw We need Kaiser Permanente to do the right thing for our patients, community, and healthcare workers. That means working together with us to ensure more staffing, and pay and benefits that keep up with inflation and the cost of living so we can continue to do our job. #United4All #hotlaborsummer #hotunionsummer ♬ We Rise Against – Jonathan Paulsen

@seiu_uhw This week we’re picketing at 50 Kaiser Permanente facilities across California, Washington, Oregon, and Colorado to demand they invest in patient care and the frontline healthcare workers who take care of our communities. #United4All ♬ Pressure (Craig J. @seiu_uhw It boggles our minds that the healthcare workers that came in every day to take care of patients during a pandemic are not earning enough to keep up with inflation and higher cost of living. Yet 49 executives at Kaiser Permanente are compensated more than $1 million annually. #United4All #hotlaborsummer #hotunionsummer ♬ Curious George – Nate Rose
