COVID-19 Daily Update: April 8, 2020

For weeks, healthcare workers across the state have been raising our voices about the emergency we’re facing everyday due to the PPE shortage. Now Gov. Newsom has responded with this major announcement on MSNBC last night with Rachel Maddow:

This announcement of 200 million masks each month for California is great news for all of us — and it shows why we work so hard to elect healthcare warriors like Gov. Newsom.

We still need other essential equipment, like isolation gowns, gloves, and face shields. Let’s keep up the pressure at the federal level — CLICK HERE to demand that Congress and the Trump administration get us all the PPE we need.

LA TIMES Spotlights SEIU-UHW Healthcare Heroes

Respiratory therapists are doing heroic work at the forefront of our COVID-19 fight — check out this LA Times article highlighting two courageous SEIU-UHW leaders: Andrea Tuma (Mercy Medical Center Redding) and Cynthia Fayne (Lakewood Medical Center). Read about the critical role respiratory therapists are playing every day and the impact this fight is having on us and our families.

SEIU-UHW and the Education Fund are partnering with Futuro Health — the organization we built with Kaiser Permanente to recruit and train the next generation of caregivers — to offer a Pandemic Readiness for LVNs training. This is an opportunity for California LVNs to get trained for the surge, and we are letting SEIU-UHW members know first. This online, self-paced, six-hour training will help LVNs learn about disease progression, infection control precautions, caring for patients on ventilators, and more.
