COVID-19 Update: May 18, 2020

WE’RE FIGHTING FOR HEALTHCARE JUSTICE ALL OVER CALIFORNIA . . .

Stanford Health Care has NO SHAME

This is corporate greed at its worst: Stanford Health Care is furloughing workers during this pandemic in what amounts to a 24% pay cut — even though Stanford has received $102 million in federal relief funding ($136 million when you include relief funds for its adjacent children’s hospital). That’s more than any other employer in California and third most in the entire nation.

Check out this TV news interview in which our union president Dave Regan speaks the blunt truth about this inequity. Stanford executives call us healthcare heroes, but their actions show that they have no respect for us, the workforce that puts our lives on the line everyday to lead our state through this pandemic.

Take a few seconds to tweet this message to show our fellow caregivers that we stand with them for healthcare justice at Stanford.

PROTEST ALERT: Confronting Prime Healthcare Across Southern CA

Prime Healthcare is trying to cut our sick leave and gut our disability benefits — during a pandemic! So today SEIU-UHW members across Prime are holding socially-distanced protests in the rain at Garden Grove, Encino, and Centinela Hospitals.

You can support Prime caregivers right now — tweet this message to reject Prime’s anti-worker actions and show our brothers and sisters there that we have their backs!

ROSA LUNA VIGIL: “People who strip the beds are also healthcare heroes”

On Friday, healthcare workers at Riverside Community Hospital held a socially-distanced vigil to honor Rosa Luna, our SEIU-UHW sister and veteran EVS worker who died of COVID-19 on May 4. Watch this powerful NBC news story from the vigil — it captures the commitment of Rosa’s blood family and union family to making sure everyone understands the danger healthcare workers face and the need for stringent safety measures for all.

Rosa was a union steward who never backed down from standing up for what’s right. Now it’s on all of us to do the same. Her death reminds us that our brothers and sisters in EVS face extreme exposure to COVID-19 every day — and that we must protect ALL healthcare workers . . .

THE REOPENING: Let’s Honor Rosa by Saving Lives

Many of our hospitals are resuming non-urgent procedures. Let’s stand with Rosa as we enter this new phase of the pandemic by putting safety first and refusing to let our employers cut corners in their rush to get back to normal.
